Real Issues. Real Talk.
For every good thing and every nightmare I’ve gone through in life, there was always a woman attached to that experience. Time is a great diviner of truth and, as the Lord has ordained that I arrive at this place, here in what I now recognize as my own Wilderness Experience, His Holy Spirit has brought into sharp focus things I could not see or understand when I was so consumed with my love of music and pursuit of
success. This woman has appeared in many shapes and many colors. She has had many names. But in every meaningful way, this was the same woman, once and again; different questions but the same test.
Having spent nearly four decades as a musician in God’s service, I’ve traveled extensively and been in the company of the nation’s top Gospel artists. I’ve learned the difference between a gift and a skill, and how God’s grace (a gift) demands commitment and discipline (skill). What I’ve learned less about is how a wife needs a husband and children need a father, God-ordained sacraments which are often incompatible with a demanding ministry in music. Every step along the way, she was there. For better and often for worse, in sickness and health, many names, many faces. Now finding myself at life’s crossroads, why is it that I can see so much clearer and hear even the faintest tones of every day of this journey? I suppose it’s because it’s hard to take in much of the scenery when you’re doing all the driving. I’m not driving so much these days, leaving that to God, which allows me to not only look out of the window, but to see my reflection in it.
This is what led me to
write a new kind of music—DC Real Talk. I don’t consider myself
wise, only experienced. Not charting new ground, just reporting
the view as I patiently await God’s leading out of this time and
place while, finally, learning to actually hear Him and obey.
